Robert
Toland
Dec 6, 1952 — Jun 9, 2025
Hamden
Robert ("Rob") Toland, age 72 of Hamden, CT, passed away on Monday, June 9, 2025, after a courageous journey with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). He was born on December 6, 1952 in Glen Ridge, NJ, to the late Truman and Marie Toland, and is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Terry (wife, Kate); daughter, Lindsay (husband, Dan); three grandchildren, Olivia, Nathan, and Wesley; and sister, Toni (husband, Hugh). He is preceded in death by his brother, Troy. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Robert grew up in Nutley, NJ and Ada, OH. He graduated with a degree in Architecture from Ohio State University. He moved to Connecticut in 1977. Shortly after arriving, he went for a routine dental cleaning where he met Nancy, the dental hygienist who would become the love of his life. They settled in their home in Hamden, where he lived until his death. Prior to his retirement, he spent his career at Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates in Hamden.
Rob loved woodworking, riding his motorcycle, sailing, tinkering in his garage while listening to public radio, and reading (especially lengthy biographies and "The New Yorker" magazine). Rob was the consummate "Mr. Fix-it" and problem solver, deeply curious about the way things work, and determined and able to handle any and all home repairs. This curiosity extended to technology and computers, where Rob was always on the cutting edge, from the Atari and Commodore computers to electric vehicles and 3D printers before they were widely popular.
