Obituary

Jeanette Margaret Meier, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a great-great grandmother, who's dogged work-ethic and witty comebacks, live on in her ever-expanding family died peacefully at Branford Hospice on June 23, 2019 after a long illness. She was 89. "Gramma" Jean, as she was lovingly known, not just by her grandchildren, but by the countless number of people whose lives she touched, was born on March 12, 1930 in West Haven, CT to John and Margaret Calkins. She spent her childhood and nearly all of her adult life in West Haven. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Richard Meier, who was stationed in the Groton Naval Yard at the time, at a roller rink in New Haven. "Dick Pop" and "Gramma Jean" spent the next 49 years together raising three children – Richard, Diane, and Lynn. Jean was ahead of her time as a female employed in industries traditionally staffed with males. She managed the receiving department at U.S. Motors in Milford and was a vault dealer for the Connecticut OTB in East Haven until she retired in 1988. Her inability to slow down made her ill-suited for retirement and she continued to work in a variety of roles until she finally settled down to enjoy a slower pace in 1993. Jean was a voracious reader of murder mysteries, an avid traveler, and fan of "the casino". Her legacy of support and love, regardless of circumstances, will be remembered by all she has left behind. "Gramma Jean" is survived by her son, Richard Meier, Jr. and his wife, Lois; her daughters Diane Cadwell and Lynn Ferriuolo; grandchildren John Muccio, Michael Meier, Danielle Muccio, Marga Verneris, Jordan Weymer, and Robert Weymer, Jr.; great-grandchildren Dustin Muccio-Schrimpe, Hailey Verneris, Jacob Verneris, Matthew Muccio-Schrimpe, Michael Muccio-Schrimpe, Robert "Ike" Weymer, Jr., Nathan Weymer, and Eli Weymer; and her great-great grandchild, Jackson Gonzalez.
