Fred Baselice 103 was born in the Bronx, NY on Jan 30 th , 1917 into an Italian family of five. His father Marco passed when Fred was 15 months old and his mother moved the family to Mt. Vernon. After Fred's childhood he began work in the scrap yard business and soon after enlisted into the National Guard in 1938. Fred was called into active duty in 1940 ranked as a Sergeant Technician Grade 4 of the 71 st Infantry, 44 th as a part of the 7 th Army. As a member of the Medical Corps he was sent into the forests of France to help wounded soldiers. Fred was injured in combat and spent ten days in a Hospital. Soon after Fred became a surgical technician where he was taught to administer anesthesia. Fred made it back to the states in 1943 and soon became engaged to his pen pal Anna from West Virginia in 1944. He was honorably discharged from the Military in 1945 and went on to marry Anna on April 27 th , 1946. Fred entered the workforce as a civilian at the VA Hospital in NY. He soon after applied for a job at the newly built VA Hospital in West Haven, CT. He was the 4 th person hired and moved the family to Connecticut. In 1963 he was hired by the US Postal Service and retired in 1973. Fred and Anna went on to raise three children and enjoyed a wonderful life together for 67 years.
Fred was a member of the American Legion Post 150. At the post, he has held every position on the board except commander. He loved being active in the Poppy Program and other community service projects organized by Post 150. Fred was recognized for his service receiving the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, WW2 Victory Medal and 3 Bronze Stars.
Fred not only served his country and community but was also an outstanding family man. Whoever knew Fred, would say that Fred always put family first. He was an amazing Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. He is survived by his son Fred Baselice & wife Edith Baselice, his daughter Claire Federico and son Mark Baselice & wife Theresa Baselice. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday February 18, 2020 at Hamden Memorial Funeral Home, 1300 Dixwell Ave, Hamden, from 4-8pm. His funeral procession will leave on Wednesday morning at 9:30am from Hamden Memorial, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at Christ The Bread of Life Parish (Blessed Sacrament Campus), 321 Circular Avenue Hamden. Entombment will follow in St. Lawrence Garden Mausoleum with full military honors. Donations can be made to Compassus Hospice, 472 Wheelers Farms Rd, Suite 302, Milford, Ct 06461.
