Obituary

Emma Lee Wright, 79, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 from complications of COVID at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was the widow of Alonzo H. Wright, just prior to his passing they celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Emma was born February 10, 1941 to the late Robert Albright and Estella Foster Albright in Savannah, Georgia. As a child Emma was affectionately nicknamed Tiny by her Uncle Nathanial Foster. Emma received her formal education in the Savannah Public School system. She met her husband, Lonnie in Savannah and married him in 1964. Later they migrated to New Haven, Connecticut. Mrs. Wright joined the House of Jacob Church in 1967, where she was a member until 2013, where she was a faithful member for 46 years until she became ill.  While attending House of Jacob she was the head usher for several years. Even though she was battling Alzheimer's and Dementia she would often talk about the House of Jacob Church and express her desire to attend. The church was forever in her heart.

Emma was an extraordinary person who exemplified kindness and generosity. She helped countless family members and friends in any and every capacity. Emma fostered and cared for many children who did not have guardians or who had struggling guardians. She provided them all with a warm and nurturing home. Emma was passionate about helping children in need, often traveling to the state capital to advocate for Probate Court children with Emma Jones. As a parent she was a no-nonsense mom, she was an authoritarian. Emma believed that children should be obedient to their parents and to God. She loved a clean home and would always say cleanliness is next to godliness. Emma was a hard and dedicated worker; she was employed by Yale New Haven Hospital for 31 years retiring at the age of 75.

When she was not working, Emma enjoyed cooking, sewing, traveling, and playing board games with family and friends. As she got older, she loved to sing gospel songs with her caretaker and friend Travis Hallett. She offered an endless supply of love and unwavering support to those she cherished the most.

Emma is survived by her daughter, Renee Kelly of Savannah, GA; her sons Shawn, Lamaar, Eric Wright of New Haven, CT; Demetrius (Yvette) Wright of Oakland, CA and Kareem Wright of Hartford, CT; her siblings Levora (JD) Thomas and Eugene Albright of New Haven, CT; Cousin Lisa Kindred of West Haven, CT; Godchildren; grandchildren; nieces; nephews and a host of relatives and friends. In addition to her Husband and parents, Emma is predeceased by her siblings Dorothy Mae Albright and Paul Albright, daughter Theresa Wright; grandsons Marquise and Ma'Trell Wright; nephew Arthur Thomas; and a special cousin Alfreda Youmans.
