David N.
Cradle
Mar 17, 1940 — Sep 21, 2022
Hamden
On September 21, 2022, David N. Cradle, 82 of Hamden passed away peacefully at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Connecticut. Born in Newport News, Virginia, he attended college at Norfolk State University, then enlisted in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, he met his wife, Ursula and they married in 1967 in Bronx, New York. David began working in the publishing industry and became one of the first African American men to serve as Director of Manufacturing at Prentice Hall. He also maintained two part time jobs, teaching at Copper Union College in Manhattan and driving a taxi. He later relocated to Hamden, Connecticut and eventually established RTSI Typographic with his best friend Jerome Turek. He later founded DN Cradle Associates, a successful typesetting company which he ran until his retirement.
David was an avid sports fan. In his youth he was captain of his high school swim team and played paddleball in his spare time. He enjoyed rooting for "any team but the Yankees", and he particularly enjoyed watching UCONN women's basketball. He loved to play pinochle and travel, particularly with his wife on their yearly vacation to Aruba.
David was known for his ability to tell a good story. He took great pride in his granddaughters, Sydney ("Syd the Kid") and Payton ("Squirt"). He cherished many relationships, particularly the bond he shared with his sister Addie and cousin Frank.
David leaves behind his devoted wife of 55 years, Ursula, his daughter the Honorable Melanie L. Cradle (Dr. Darryl Simms), his granddaughters Sydney and Payton Simms, his sister Addie Tolson of Charlotte, and numerous friends and relatives who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his son Eric David Cradle. David was comforted in his final days with the thought that he would be reunited with his son.
In accordance with his wishes, services will be private. The family would like to give special thanks to the incredibly dedicated staff at Connecticut Hospice for their expression of love, kindness and compassion towards David and his family during this difficult time. The family would also like to thank Dr. David Hesse for his special friendship and great care.
